Meetings & Events

The 3rd quarter 2025 meeting of the Brunswick County Historical Society will be held on August 11, 7:30 PM, at the Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation Building, 795 Ocean Highway West, Supply, NC.

Our speaker for the August meeting will be 5th generation Brunswick County native Mr. R. Howard Varnam. He grew up on the Lockwood Folly River while enjoying local history and his presentation will be on the history of Varnamtown.

Howard graduated from Shallotte High School and obtained a degree in Marine Technology from the Cape Fear Technical Institute. He began working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1970 and retired in 2007 as Chief of Navigation for the Wilmington District. He returned in 2009 thru 2013 as Director of Navigation and Special Assistant to Chief of Operations.

Howard was born in 1950 in Brunswick County and married Barbara Joyce Gore, from Ocean Isle Beach. They have three children and live in Varnamtown.

Regular quarterly meetings of BCHS are held the second Monday of February, May, August, and November, 7:30 PM, in the meeting room at:
