Fort Caswell Historic District encompasses 43 buildings and 23 structures. Built between 1826 and 1836 at a cost of $473,402, it was named for Richard Caswell, the first Governor of North Carolina. Except for Confederate control during the Civil War, it was occupied by United States armed forces between 1836 and 1945. The property is now a private religious retreat and generally not open to the public.
